In this semester-long unit of study, we explored various myths, legends, and stories of magic from the Spanish-speaking world. We read a full mini-novel in Spanish titled: El Ekeko: Un misterio boliviano.
The book is about a poor boy named Paco who lives in Bolivia. One day he discovers a talisman that can make any object he draws become real and he soon learns the price of his wishes. This book contains the history of Bolivia intertwined inside of its myths. From the letters in the closets talking about the Indigenous resistance in the 1700s to Paco shoe shining in the plaza and Nicolas working in the mines. Reading this book made me think about the comparison of the lived of different economic classes in many countries and what is viewed as normal and taken for granted in America are an extreme luxury in Bolivia. What was most interesting about this unit was all the different stories we got to learn about the different regions of south America.
